TDCJ Statewide Release Routes
For a full discharge inquiry, distinguish the date prison custody ended from the date the sentence ended. Parole can begin at the prison exit and continue until discharge. Mandatory supervision also has a release stage and a later completion stage. Ask for both dates when the difference matters. The Amarillo office route applies to Sherman County supervision questions, but the official TDCJ certificate remains the clearest record of the state event.
The TDCJ inmate information hub serves people currently incarcerated in state facilities. A Sherman County detainee transferred to TDCJ remains in custody. The county sheet proves departure from the local jail, while the TDCJ record confirms state admission. Neither event is a community release.
Later release may be parole, mandatory supervision, or discharge. Parole and mandatory supervision place the person in the community under legal supervision. Discharge means the sentence and any linked supervision have ended. The public portions of a release certificate, discharge certificate, parole status, dates, and board minute sheet provide stronger historical proof than disappearance from the current locator.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Current TDCJ inmate | Still in state custody |
| Parole | Released under supervision |
| Mandatory supervision | Statutory supervised release |
| Discharge | Sentence and supervision completed |
Confirm TDCJ Release Status
Search the TDCJ online inmate search by last name and first name, or use the seven-digit TDCJ number or SID number. Gender and race can narrow a name search. A detail record can show current location, conviction and sentence information, and Projected Release Date. The data is at least twenty-four hours old and updates on working days.
- Search with the most reliable identifier.
- Open the current inmate detail.
- Record the TDCJ number, unit, sentence data, and projected date.
- Treat the date as an estimate, not proof of exit.
- If the record later vanishes, use TDCJ records and parole channels.
TDCJ Release Record Channels
The no-charge inmate-information email at pia@tdcj.texas.gov accepts a full name and TDCJ number. If the number is unknown, give an exact birth date or approximate age and county of conviction. It may return the number, location, offense, incarceration history, current county and court, and Projected Release Date. It does not provide photographs.
For certificates and formal records, use the TDCJ Public Information Act form, email PIA@tdcj.texas.gov, or mail TDCJ Public Information Request, P.O. Box 4017, Huntsville, TX 77342. Ask narrowly for public or redacted release and discharge certificates, parole or mandatory-supervision status and dates, applicable PIDS or board minutes, and a releasable TDCJ-CID photograph. Government Code section 508.313 can protect parts of a parole file.
TDCJ Projected Release Fields
Projected Release Date is TDCJ’s estimate based on the greater of the minimum expiration date or the projected release date, with time credits and governing law applied. It is not a promised gate date. Good-conduct time under Government Code Chapter 498 affects classification and eligibility as allowed by law, but it is not a simple day-for-day guarantee.
Texas has no general rule that every prisoner serves about eighty-five percent. For offenses and findings covered by Government Code section 508.145(d), calendar time without good-conduct time must meet the specified half-sentence or thirty-year threshold, subject to the two-year floor. That is parole eligibility, not automatic release. Board action, program conditions, detainers, misconduct, sentence changes, and processing can alter what happens.
- Projected release
- An estimate for a current prisoner.
- Parole
- Conditional release under supervision.
- Mandatory supervision
- A separate form of supervised release governed by law.
- Discharge
- Completion of incarceration and supervision for the sentence.
TDCJ Parole Release Proof
The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles decides parole and mandatory-supervision matters. A favorable vote is a milestone, not proof that the person crossed the gate. Some vote codes require a program or future date. New information, misconduct, detainers, and legal changes can delay or rescind an approval.
For a person returning to Sherman County, the official county crosswalk routes parole questions to Amarillo District Parole Office, Region V. It is at 5809 South Western St., Suite 120, Amarillo, TX 79110, phone 806-355-9218. Call to confirm the appropriate supervising office before travel. The office can address public supervision routing, while TDCJ records establish the release form and date.
The separate TDCJ IVSS portal can issue state-prison, parole, and mandatory-supervision notices. A notice can prompt verification, but it is not a certified release certificate.
ICE Holds During TDCJ Release
An ICE detainer can change who receives a person when state custody ends. Release from TDCJ to ICE is a custodial transfer, not a confirmed return to Sherman County. Ask TDCJ for the public release disposition, then search the ICE ODLS by A-number and country of birth or exact name and country of birth.
ODLS may cover current custody and release in roughly the past sixty days, but exclusions and lag apply. A blank result is not proof. The ICE reporting line is 1-888-351-4024, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. Pair federal information with the state release record.
Note: One record documents departure from TDCJ, while the next custodian documents continued detention or later release.
TDCJ Versus County Release
TDCJ does not cover a person who merely bonded out of Sherman County Jail, finished a short county sentence, or never entered state custody. Conversely, a TDCJ projected date does not predict county jail processing. Begin with the system that actually held the person.
For a county-to-state transfer, obtain both records. The Sheriff’s sheet should show the local transfer date and destination. The TDCJ locator can show the receiving unit after updates. For the later prison exit, use TDCJ release or discharge records, Parole Division status, and state IVSS. This chain preserves the difference between leaving a building and leaving custody.
The broader Sherman County release record search helps classify local, state, federal, and immigration paths before a request is sent.
TDCJ Release Request Costs
TDCJ publishes a general cost outline of ten cents per page plus delivery for fewer than fifty pages. Personnel and overhead may apply to larger work. When expected cost exceeds forty dollars, the agency provides an estimate and the requester must respond within the stated ten-day period. These are TDCJ rules and must not be assigned to Sherman County Sheriff records.
Keep the request narrow. Name the person with TDCJ or SID number and date of birth, describe the certificate or status sought, and give a date range. Ask for segregable public parts after redaction. A formal request creates a better historical trail than repeatedly checking a locator designed only for current inmates.
TDCJ Release Review Milestones
Texas does not hold a conventional public hearing for an individual prisoner’s first parole review. Board panel members review and vote the file individually. The Board’s public policy meetings are not calendars of offender release hearings. Initial review commonly begins several months before the vote, and the law in effect on the offense date controls eligibility. Eligibility means the file may be considered. It does not compel approval or set the physical exit date.
Vote codes need careful reading. FI-1 indicates release when eligible, while FI-2 identifies a specified future release date. Other FI codes can require treatment or another program before release processing can finish. RMS concerns release to mandatory supervision. Denial outcomes can set a later review or require service of the sentence balance under the applicable law. Because definitions and program codes can change, check the current Board vote options before interpreting a result.
An approval can be withdrawn when new facts, misconduct, a detainer, or another legal circumstance intervenes. A program-conditioned vote leaves the person incarcerated while the condition and processing remain incomplete. Review and Release Processing can be reached at 512-406-5202 for appropriate post-vote questions. That office does not turn a Board vote into proof that release already occurred. The TDCJ certificate and Parole Division record remain the stronger evidence of an actual exit.
TDCJ Release Evidence Order
Use the current locator for present state incarceration. Use a release certificate for parole or mandatory-supervision departure, and use a discharge certificate when the sentence and supervision end. A Board vote or projected date comes earlier in the process. A county transfer sheet comes earlier still. Lining up those records prevents a Sherman County Jail transfer from being described as a prison release and prevents parole eligibility from being presented as a guaranteed date.
TDCJ’s simple email channel and formal Public Information Act channel also serve different purposes. The simple channel supplies a defined set of inmate facts without charge and expressly excludes photographs. The formal request can seek releasable certificates, public parole status, board material, and a TDCJ-CID photograph subject to confidentiality and redaction. Choose the channel based on the document needed.
